Primary Purpose:

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) serves as a central operational hub for the nursing unit, providing high-level administrative, clerical, and coordination support to ensure efficient clinical workflows and exceptional resident care delivery. This role partners closely with nursing leadership, interdisciplinary teams, and ancillary departments to drive communication accuracy, regulatory compliance, and unit-level effectiveness in a fast-paced skilled nursing environment.

Essential Duties:

  • Act as the primary administrative liaison for the nursing unit, ensuring seamless communication between nursing staff, providers, residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Coordinate and manage unit documentation, including admissions, discharges, transfers, physician orders, care plans, and census tracking
  • Accurately enter, update, and maintain resident information in the electronic health record (EHR) system in accordance with facility policy and regulatory standards
  • Monitor order workflows to ensure timely transcription, processing, and follow-up
  • Support nursing leadership with scheduling coordination, staffing communications, and operational reporting as assigned
  • Facilitate smooth unit operations by managing phones, call lights, supply requests, and unit-based inquiries
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) requirements, and facility policies at all times
  • Serve as a customer-service-oriented point of contact, promoting a professional, welcoming environment for residents and visitors
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support quality outcomes, resident satisfaction, and operational excellence
  • Other Duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of a Health Unit Coordinator, Medical Secretary, or related healthcare administrative program preferred
  • Prior experience in a skilled nursing facility, long-term care, hospital, or clinical setting strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic care environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and clinical documentation workflows
  • Ability to operate effectively within a regulated healthcare environment
  • High attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and compliance

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, and move throughout the unit as needed
  • Frequent use of computers, phones, and office equipment
  • Occasional lifting of light office or unit materials
